Abstract

Sleeve gastrectomy has gained an increasing attention as a common intervention to tackle obesity, an issue of massive importance both at the global and national levels. There is however little surveillance and general population awareness, especially in Saudi Arabia. The aim of this study was to assess this level of knowledge and awareness for the indications and complications of sleeve gastrectomy in adults in Saudi Arabia. A structured, self-administered online questionnaire was developed based on previous literature and used in a descriptive cross-sectional study from July to December 2024. A total of 26 questions, which were answered in either Arabic or English, were divided into four sections. Eight hundred nine adults participated in the study with mean age of 29.9 years. Most were female (68.5%), were Saudi nationals (93.1%) and had some education beyond high school (78.7%). Notably, 83.7% had someone who had undergone sleeve gastrectomy and this mostly through family connections (62.3%). However, awareness of the procedure was high (98.9 percent), while only 63 percent recognized potential complications with the possible complications including hemorrhage (44.7 percent) and iron deficiency (43.5 percent). Shockingly 34.7percent were unsure of the complications, that is, significant education gaps. Demographic factors such as gender, age nationality, marital status, and educational level correlated significantly with knowledge levels (p < 0.05). The findings show a high recognition for adults of sleeve gastrectomy in Saudi Arabia but gaps in knowledge of its complications and indications. Social media dependence for information is bolstered by the fact that effective educational interventions are necessary to combat misconceptions and advance educational health literacy regarding weight loss surgical options. Strategies of education may provide sensitivity and support the process of informed decision-making that can ultimately have a positive impact on patient outcomes in the process of obesity management.
