COMPARISON OF CONVENTIONAL VS LASER GINGIVECTOMY IN THE MANAGEMENT OF GINGIVAL ENLARGEMENT: A CLINICAL STUDY
Abstract
There are many techniques to remove the enlarged gingival tissues, out of which conventional gingivectomy with the use of scalpels have been practised by many dentists to excise the enlarged tissues. However, due to a number of benefits, LASER play a significant role in the field of dentistry, and LASER-assisted gingivectomy is one of them.
AIM AND OBJECTIVES
Our aim of the study is to compare conventional gingivectomy vs laser gingivectomy in the management of gingival enlargement and the objective is to evaluate the pain and healing between gingivectomy done with a scalpel and laser.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
15 subjects are divided into two groups as a split mouth study design after screening. Group I gingivectomy done with scalpel and Group II gingivectomy done with laser. Pain and discomfort were evaluated using Visual analogue scale (VAS) on first post operative day and 7th day in both groups and healing was assessed on the 7th day in both the groups.
RESULTS
Postoperatively, Though both the groups showed better results and better healing with less pain and discomfort, LASER treated group showed a statistically significant difference than conventional group (P value – 0.000). Hence, LASER is the best alternate to scalpel gingivectomy.
